In a significant development, reports confirm that India’s T20I skipper Suryakumar Yadav is set to undergo surgery on Wednesday. According to Gaurav Gupta from The Times of India, the right-handed batter has been suffering from a sports hernia and traveled to London a few weeks ago to consult a specialist.
The report notes that SKY will require a month or two to recover from the injury but is likely to be fit in time for India’s next T20I series in August against Bangladesh.
“Post the surgery, it will take 10–12 days till the stitches come off. He will not be able to walk much and will have to basically take complete rest. After that, Surya will recuperate at the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru,” a source told The Times of India.
SKY to Undergo Second Surgery for Sports Hernia
This is not the first time a sports hernia has troubled Suryakumar. The India skipper previously underwent surgery in January 2024, when he traveled to Munich, Germany, for the procedure. That surgery ruled him out of action for an extended period.
SKY missed the first few IPL matches but made a long-awaited return with Mumbai Indians in the cash-rich league.
SKY Played IPL With Pain
Reports suggest that the 34-year-old was in pain throughout IPL 2025 but delayed treatment to avoid missing games for Mumbai Indians. Despite the discomfort, the right-handed batter was his team’s standout performer, scoring 717 runs in 16 matches at an average of 65.18. He also set the record for most consecutive 25+ scores in T20s.
Following the IPL, Surya participated in the Mumbai T20 League 2025, where he scored 122 runs in four innings. After fulfilling all his commitments, SKY traveled to England, as it was the ideal time for surgery due to the absence of T20Is in the coming months.
