The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) cruised towards a four-wicket win over ‘El Classico’ rivals Mumbai Indians in match three of the IPL 2025 season at Chennai’s Chepauk Stadium. CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and overseas opener Rachin Ravindra played starring roles in the match with clinical half-centuries.

Here’s the timeline of how CSK vs MI panned out in Chennai:

SKY, Tilak Lead Rescue After Khaleel, Ashwin Run Through MI Top-Order

CSK paceman Khaleel Ahmed struck in his opening over with the wicket of Mumbai Indians legend Rohit Sharma for a four-ball duck. Ahmed also knocked over Sharma’s opening partner Ryan Rickelton within his opening spell as Mumbai Indians slipped to 21-2 in less than three overs. Ravichandran Ashwin piled on Mumbai Indians’ misery with the wicket of threatening number three Will Jacks inside the opening powerplay.

At 36-3, stand-in captain Suryakumar Yadav (29 off 26) and number five Tilak Varma (31 off 25) struck back with a fighting 51-run partnership for the fourth wicket. The two cricketers steered the Mumbai Indians to 82-3 at the halfway stage of the innings.

Noor Ahmad Limits MI Flourish In Second Half

CSK’s Afghanistan based spinner Noor Ahmad picked up the key wickets of Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma, as well as that of young Robin Minz in quick succession as the Mumbai Indians slipped from 87-3 to 96-6 by the end of the 13th over.

Ahmad also got rid of Naman Dhir a couple of overs later to finish his spell with impressive figures of 4-18.

Khaleel Ahmed picked up his third wicket in the form of tailender Trent Boult, while Nathan Ellis trapped Mitchell Santner in his expensive spell of 1-38.

Batting at number nine, Deepak Chahar slogged a few during his 15-ball knock of 28* to surge Mumbai Indians to a competitive 155-9 from 20 overs.

Captain Gaikwad Muscles 22-Ball 50 In Sublime CSK Start

Overcoming the early dismissal of opener Rahul Tripathi to Deepak Chahar in just the second over of the innings, CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad stabilised his team’s run-chase pursuit with a 22-ball half-century. Batting at number three, Gaikwad (53 off 26) composed 67 quick runs with opener Rachin Ravindra as CSK raced to 78-1 in less than eight overs.

The skipper was eventually holed out at boundary by Will Jacks off Vignesh Puthur, before Shivam Dube also perished to the left-arm wrist spinner as the hosts slipped to 100-3 in 11 overs.

Rachin Ravindra Takes CSK Over MI With Unbeaten 65*

Vignesh Puthur (3-32) also trapped Deepak Hooda to bag his third wicket of the evening, signalling a glimmer of hope for the Mumbai Indians in the process. Will Jacks cleaned up Sam Curran at 116-5, and Ravindra Jadeja made a sluggish 18-ball 17 before a runout halted his stay.

Amidst CSK’s late run-chase jitters, Rachin Ravindra stood tall to compile an elegant 65* from 45 balls with two boundaries and four sixes. His run-chase masterclass helped CSK storm past Mumbai Indians’ 155 in the final over with four wickets in hand.
