If T20 redefined batting with its relentless aggression, the IPL seems to have taken it to an entirely new dimension, especially over the past couple of seasons. Teams appear to be raising the stakes with their batting by making full use of the opening powerplay overs, which sometimes result in blistering starts and record-breaking displays.

Celebrating explosive batting starts in IPL, here is a detailed look at five of the fastest team 100s ever recorded in the history of the tournament.

5. SRH – 6.4 overs vs RR, Hyderabad 2025

Sunrisers Hyderabad’s top-order muscled its way to a quick team 100 in their opening match of the IPL 2025 season. While Abhishek Sharma signaled SRH’s early intent with a 10-run opening over, his senior partner Travis Head carried on the momentum with a burgeoning 21-ball half-century.

Young Abhishek chipped in with a fiery 11-ball 24 at the top before making his way back to the dugout in the fourth over of the innings. Thereafter, Head shared another turbulent partnership with belligerent number three Ishan Kishan, blazing the SRH past the 100-run mark in just 6.4 overs in the process.

4. CSK – 6 overs vs PBKS, Mumbai 2014

In the high-octane second qualifier match of the IPL 2014 season at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, CSK legend Suresh Raina gave Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) a scar for the ages by nearly pulling off a miraculous run-chase. In pursuit of 227 runs for a place in the finals, Raina motored CSK to its team 100 exactly by the end of the sixth over, despite losing both openers cheaply in the innings.

The legendary number three batter himself clobbered 87 of those runs from just 25 deliveries in an exhilarating knock featuring 12 boundaries and six sixes. Unfortunately for Raina, CSK ended up losing the match as runs dried up for them after his run out to George Bailey at the start of the following over.

3. KKR – 6 overs vs RCB, Bengaluru 2017

KKR openers Sunil Narine and Chris Lynn humbled RCB bowlers at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium back in May 2017 with a 100-plus partnership in just six overs. Chasing 159 runs for a win, Narine notched up a 15-ball half-century (IPL record at the time), as he and Lynn shared 105 runs in just 36 balls. In doing so, the two cricketers also mounted the highest-ever IPL team total in the powerplay overs (at the time), and one of the fastest-ever IPL team hundreds.

As one can expect, Narine and Lynn’s onslaught ensured smooth sailing for the KKR as they shrugged off the remaining runs with nearly five overs to spare.

2. SRH – 5.4 overs vs LSG, Lucknow 2024

In match 57 of the IPL 2024 season at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, SRH openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head bludgeoned LSG’s hapless bowlers into oblivion with a whirlwind 167-run opening stand in just 9.4 overs. The two hard-hitting barbarians notched up SRH’s 100th run in just 5.4 overs to bring up one of the fastest team 100s in IPL history, making absolute lightwork of LSG’s rather competitive 165-run total.

While Abhishek smeared 75* runs from just 28 balls, Head clattered an unbeaten 89 off 30 deliveries.

1. SRH – 5 overs vs DC, Delhi 2024

Just a few weeks before taking LSG bowlers to the cleaners, SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma brandished their bats at Delhi Capitals bowlers for six straight overs at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. In just five overs, the two cricketers brought up Capitals’ wicketless team 100. By the end of the opening six-over powerplay period, the Capitals reached 125-0 to create an all-time T20 record.

At the time of reaching team 100, young Abhishek reached 40* off 10 with two fours and five sixes, meanwhile the firebrand Australian opener stormed to a turbulent 20-ball 62*. Their guns-trotting start set SRH’s tone early in the match, allowing them to seal two points on offer with a 67-run win.
