Guyana Amazon Warriors defeated Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in match number two of the CPL 2024 season at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

For the second time in succession, the Antigua and Barbuda Falcons lost opening batter Teddy Bishop early in the innings to prompt Fakhar Zaman forge a rescue act with number three Kofi James. Both Fakhar and James shared 74 runs for the second wicket from just 44 deliveries to take their team past the 50-run mark without further casualty.

The Pakistani-based opener crashed 40 runs from 33 balls with three boundaries and two sixes, while James launched five boundaries and a six to make 37 off just 24 balls.

After Antigua and Barbuda Falcons raced to 84-1 in nine overs, Guyana Amazon Warriors spinner Gudakesh Motie struck back for his team with a quick three-wicket burst.

For starters, Motie cleaned up a well-set Kofi James and wicketkeeper-batter Sam Billings as the Falcons slipped to 96-3 in 11.1 overs. The left-arm spinner also had Jewel Andrew caught out by Shimron Hetmyer while Fakhar Zaman mistimed one off Dwaine Pretorius (1-33) as the Falcons slipped to 114-5 at one stage of the innings.

Fortunately for the Falcons, Imad Wasim at number six blasted four boundaries and two maximums in his 21-ball 40 to blaze his team to 168-6 by the time of their 20 overs.

ABF vs GAW Highlights: Warriors Lose Both Openers Within Powerplay

Chasing 169, Guyana Amazon Warriors lost top-order pinch-hitter Gudakesh Motie to a clean-up job from Falcons captain Chris Green in the first over of the innings. Motie’s opening partner Rahmanullah Gurbaz launched two sixes in his 14-ball 20 before the Afghanistan star was holed out at mid-wicket off Imad Wasim at 38-2 in 4.3 overs.

The Warriors eventually concluded their opening powerplay at 41-2 with Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer batting at the crease.

Shai Hope cracked 41 runs from 34 balls at number three with two boundaries and two sixes to anchor the Guyana Amazon Warriors past the 100-run mark. Shimron Hetmyer made a sluggish 19 from 21 balls while wicketkeeper Azam Khan scored a near run-a-ball 10 before both were dismissed by Imad Wasim and Shamar Springer respectively.

Fabian Allen accounted for the wicket of Keemo Paul (10 off nine) as the Warriors slipped to 100-5 in 14.2 overs in a chase of 169. Fortunately for the Warriors, Romario Shepherd belted four sixes in his 16-ball whirlwind knock of 32 in the slog overs.

Dwaine Pretorius also cracked 20 unbeaten runs from just 10 deliveries, which included the last-ball winning hit off Mohammad Amir to steer Warriors to a remarkable three-wicket win.
