Shoaib Malik has revealed that he was offered to become Pakistan team selector by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ahead of this year’s 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and the USA. While speaking at a press conference, the former Pakistan captain further revealed that he declined the offer.

Malik, who recently played for Pakistan Champions at the World Championship of Legends in England, said he turned down the opportunity because he still wants to pursue franchise-based T20 tournaments as a player.

Shoaib Malik “not interested” in playing for Pakistan

While interacting with the reporters at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik said that he does not intend to become team selector while concurrently playing T20 cricket. Malik, a veteran of 542 T20 matches, further confirmed his availability for upcoming Pakistan-based T20 competitions in a bid to guide emerging Pakistani talents through his experience.

The 42-year-old, who has already announced his Test and ODI retirements, further revealed that he has no interest in playing for Pakistan’s T20I team either.

Shoaib Malik made his international debut in 1999 with an ODI against West Indies at Sharjah. Up until November 2021, he has featured in 35 Tests, 287 ODIs and 124 T20I matches for the Pakistan cricket team.

While he has made himself unavailable for Pakistan’s international commitments, he continues to ply his trade in various franchise-based T20 competitions all over the world.
