After a lot of buzz and speculations, the IPL retention list was finally out with franchises retaining their top stars and due to the rules of the competition, they had to release some of their best players as well.
Talking about the Royal Challengers Bengaluru, they made some smart choice by retaining only three players - Virat Kohli, Rajat Patidar and uncapped player, Yash Dayal. They released skipper Faf du Plessis and star all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, however, what caught the eyebrows was the exclusion of Cameron Green.
Green was acquired from the Mumbai Indians via a trade deal last season and the all-rounder had a decent season, scoring 255 runs, at 143.26, and picked up 10 wickets to help RCB reach the knockout stage of the tournament.
RCB was expected to retain Green, but they decided against it. After the retention list was out, RCB Director of Cricket, Mo Babat asserted that Green was in their scheme of things, but the serious back injury he suffered early this year made the franchise alter their plans.
“There was one other player we certainly would have retained. That’s Cameron Green, but he’s unfortunately out of the IPL due to injury," Mo Babat said in a statement.
RCB retains Indian core, overseas stars neglected
In an interesting move, RCB decided to retain their Indian core - Virat Kohli (21 crore), Rajat Patidar (11 crore), and Yash Dayal (4 crore). As a result, they have a purse of 84 crore in the bag for the mega auction.
RCB will most likely three RTM cards - one on Will Jacks, one on Mohammed Siraj and if Green gets back to his full fitness, he can be brought back in the side as well.
The side lacks a captain and a wicket-keeper and this is the area RCB will target in the upcoming mega auction.
