Rohit drops in latest ICC rankings [Source: PTI]
Nothing is going right for Rohit Sharma, both as a Test batter and as a leader of the side. In August 2024, the captain of the Test team was ranked 6th in the ICC rankings, but just over three months later, he has slipped down massively.
Before the second Test match against New Zealand, Rohit was ranked 15th in the Test rankings. However, he had a poor showing against the Kiwis and failed to make any impact as the skipper slipped down nine places to 24th in the Test rankings.
Barring a fifty in the second innings of the Bengaluru Test, Rohit had low scores of 2, 0, 8 in the other three innings as India crumbled under pressure and lost the series against the Kiwis. Interestingly, this is Rohit's worst Test rankings in almost 6 years. In December 2018, he was at the 44th position, but just a year later, he jumped to 17th in the rankings.
From 2021-23, Rohit Sharma dominated red-ball cricket and was also in the top-5 in the batting charts. However, he couldn't pile on big scores against New Zealand and Bangladesh, and as a result his ranking suffered.
Rabada snatches Bumrah's number 1 ranking
Kagiso Rabada was on fire in the recently concluded first Test Vs Bangladesh. He became the quickest bowler to 300 Test scalps and ICC rewarded him by giving him the number one Test rankings.
The Proteas speedster surpassed India's Jasprit Bumrah in the Test rankings. Bumrah, went wicketless in the Pune Test match Vs New Zealand and as a result his ranking suffered big.
Rabada, on the other hand is currently participating in the 2nd Test match Vs Bangladesh and has a great chance of creating distance between him and Bumrah.
