Tim Southee Charged With Breach Of ICC Code Of Conduct That Deals With Equipment Abuse

New Zealand star pacer Tim Southee has been reprimanded and handed one demerit point for breaching ICC code of conduct that includes abuse of cricket equipment, clothing, ground fitting etc during the 2024 T20 World Cup group game against West Indies.

The T20 World Cup 2024 has been a nightmare for New Zealand as the Kiwis got knocked out of the group stages after losing the previous game against West Indies in Trinidad.

Chasing 150 runs on a decent pitch, Kane Williamson and his troops suffered a narrow 13-run loss due to untimely wickets of set batters.

That being said, to further add to the Kiwis’ misery, veteran pacer Tim Southee has been charged with ICC Code of Conduct violation. The breach occurred during a high-stakes match against West Indies, where Southee, in a moment of frustration breached Article 2.2 of the player code of conduct.

Article 2.2 in question pertains to the abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment, or fixtures and fittings during an international match. Such actions are considered detrimental to the spirit of the game, promoting unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Hence, to set an example, Tim Southee has been handed one demerit point and an official reprimand from the ICC. This is Southee’s first offence in the past 24 months, which means the penalty is relatively light.

However, repeated offences could lead to more severe consequences, including suspension. Tim Southee also accepted the charges and bore the consequences of the same.

New Zealand, meanwhile, has been knocked out of a major ICC event for the first time in a long while, which is nothing short of a major upset and a wake-up call for the Kiwis.
