West Indies prevailed over New Zealand to make it three out of three this 2024 T20 World Cup and reach the top of the Group C points table.

The outcome also helped West Indies become the first side from Group C to qualify for the Super Eight stage of the competition.

Here’s the timeline of how WI vs NZ panned out in Trinidad:

WI vs NZ Highlights: Boult, Southee Tower Over WI In Powerplay

New Zealand’s opening fast bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee both towered over West Indies top-order to gain early advantage for the ‘Black Caps’. While Boult cleaned up Johnson Charles in the first over of the match, 35-year-old Southee removed dangermen Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell inside the first six overs.

WI vs NZ Highlights: Ferguson, Neesham Blaze Through West Indies’ Middle-Order

Lockie Ferguson and James Neesham also struck in their opening spells to get rid of Roston Chase and Brandon King respectively as West Indies slipped to 30-5 in 6.3 overs.

Chase bit the dust when he attempted to deposit Ferguson in front of square, only to get holed out by a running Rachin Ravindra from mid-on. Neesham further piled on West Indies pain by getting a well-set King caught behind by stumper Devon Conway.

WI vs NZ Highlights: Sherfane Rutherford Ensures Big Finish For WI

Arriving to the crease in the sixth over, number six batter Sherfane Rutherford led West Indies’ robust recovery by minting quick runs all while preserving lower-order wickets. Despite losing Akeal Hosein (15 off 17), Andre Russell (14 off seven) and Romario Shepherd (13 at run-a-ball) in the space of five overs, Rutherford kept composure and smeared a rebellious 68*-run knock from just 39 deliveries.

The cricketer pounded two boundaries and launched six sixes to elevate West Indies from 112-9 in 17.5 overs to a respectable 149-run finish.

WI vs NZ Highlights: Spinners, Joseph Relegate NZ To 58-4 At Halfway Stage

Chasing 150 runs for a win, New Zealand lost opener Devon Conway to a top-edge off West Indies new-ball spinner Akeal Hosein. Fellow opening batter Finn Allen, despite racing to a fiery 22-ball 26* in the sixth over, lost momentum as he spliced one straight towards Andre Russell at deep square leg off Alzarri Joseph.

Left-arm West Indies spinner Gudakesh Motie curtailed the threatening stay of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson before claiming Rachin Ravindra as New Zealand limped their way to 58-4 at the halfway stage of the run-chase.

WI vs NZ Highlights: Motie Takes Three, Joseph Finishes With Four In WI Win

A charged-up Gudakesh Motie shattered Daryl Mitchell’s stumps to pick his third wicket of the evening before eventually finishing with figures of 3-25.

Joseph, who struck with the new-ball to get rid of a well-set Finn Allen, broke through New Zealand’s lower-order by accounting for the sudden dismissals of James Neesham, Glenn Phillips and Tim Southee.

Joseph’s spell of 4-19 restricted New Zealand to 136-9 as West Indies walked away with a 13-run win. The outcome also helped the West Indies to become the first Group C team of the 2024 T20 World Cup to qualify for the Super Eights.
