Why Not Rinku Singh But Shubman Gill Been Released From IND's T20 WC 2024 Group?

Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan are set to be released from India’s T20 World Cup 2024 travelling reverses. The two cricketers had travelled to the USA with the Men in Blue contingent earlier this month.

Their release from the travelling group garnered much attention and curiosity from Indian cricket fans, with certain reports even speculating that Shubman Gill was released owing to disciplinary issues. However, as confirmed by sources, it has been told to be a false allegation.

However, according to a senior BCCI source, both cricketers were only supposed to stay with the Indian team till the Group League stage of the tournament.

Why India released Shubman Gill and not Rinku Singh?

Shubman Gill and fast bowler Avesh Khan are set to fly back home after India’s final 2024 T20 World Cup Group A game against Canada on June 15.

As per a BCCI source, the Indian team management decided to release Gill instead of fellow travelling reserve Rinku Singh because the latter can replace anyone in the squad in case of a potential injury.

However, in Gill’s case, the dashing opening batter can only replace current openers Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being already present in the group as the third opening option.

Moreover, Rinku Singh has enjoyed a “fair amount of net session” in New York and his abilities as a middle-order batter can come in handy in case if all-rounder Shivam Dube’s fast bowling skills will not be factored in.

“The logic to release Gill and Avesh is pretty straightforward. In case there is any injury concerns for either skipper Rohit Sharma or star batter Virat Kohli, the team has Yashasvi Jaiswal in the squad of 15, who can then come in. There is no requirement of a fourth opener during the Super Eights. It has also been noted that Gill did not get a lot of batting time during the usual net sessions in New York," a senior BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.

"Rinku, who has enjoyed a fair amount of net session, will accompany the team because of his dual utility -- he is a finisher in the middle-order and can replace anyone who gets injured in that slot. And with Rinku being a left-hander, he is a like-for-like replacement of Shivam Dube, if the latter's military medium pacers are not factored in."

The Indian team has already qualified for the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup 2024 after winning over Ireland, Pakistan and USA in successive matches.

Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, the ‘Men in Blue’ will now face Canada on June 15 at Lauderhill’s Central Broward Park.
