Can New Zealand Still Qualify For The Super 8 Of T20 World Cup 2024? Check Scenarios

Twelve days ago, who would have thought that New Zealand would fail to qualify for the Super 8 stage and be on the verge of being knocked out of the current edition after playing their first two games? New Zealand's back-to-back defeats have brought them to the brink of elimination.

New Zealand were crushed by Afghanistan in their first game, suffering an 84-run loss that heavily dented their Net Run Rate. Next, they played the West Indies, and despite the Men in Maroon posting a modest total, they managed to restrict the Kiwis' batting, resulting in a 13-run defeat for New Zealand. After losing their first two games, New Zealand are at the bottom of the Group C points table with an NRR of -2.425.

From the same group, West Indies have qualified for the Super 8 round with three wins in three games, leaving only one spot open for the Super 8 from Group C. Afghanistan and New Zealand are the primary contenders unless Uganda or PNG cause a series of upsets.

After New Zealand’s loss to the West Indies, Afghanistan are in the best position to qualify for the next round, given their superior NRR of +5.225. They need to win just one of their remaining two games to qualify for the Super 8.

But what about New Zealand? The Kiwis still have a slim mathematical chance of staying in the tournament, but they could be eliminated before their next match. Their next two games are must-wins.

The maximum points the Black Caps can achieve from here is four. They need not only to win but also to win by large margins to surpass Afghanistan’s NRR. Additionally, they must hope that Afghanistan lose both their remaining games.
