Sydney Sixers’ teenage superstar Caoimhe Bray has been ruled out for months after suffering a painful setback of a stress fracture injury in her back. The 16-year-old has withdrawn from the Sixers’ WBBL challenger game against Perth after scans confirmed the injury had resurfaced.

Bray had been in brilliant form this season, becoming the youngest player ever to take a hat-trick in a major women’s T20 league when she stunned the Sydney Thunder last month.

Caoimhe Bray to remain out of action for a long time

But just weeks later, Bray’s season came to a sudden halt. The injury is expected to keep Caoimhe Bray out for several months, meaning she is likely done for both the Sixers and NSW this year.

This isn’t the first time Bray has faced this problem. She also missed the end of last summer with the same back issue.

The recurrence raises concerns about managing her workload, especially because she is a rare dual-sport athlete, excelling in both cricket and soccer.

Before rising in the WBBL, Caoimhe Bray played goalkeeper for the Young Matildas in 2024.

Caoimhe Bray wants to continue playing Soccer

Despite the injury setbacks, Caoimhe Bray had earlier said she wants to continue playing both sports for as long as possible, even if people are constantly urging her to choose one.

"So many people are asking the question will you still be playing soccer or still be playing cricket. I have the three years signed with the Sixers, and so much can change over that period. If you don't know the future, neither do I. I don't know what it will be like in a few years. But I am going to try and stick to (doing both) as much as I can," Bray told Australia Associated Press.

That being said, her absence is a huge blow for the Sydney Sixers, who lose a fast-rising all-rounder just before the most important stage of the tournament.

The winner of Thursday’s qualifier will face Hobart in the WBBL final on Saturday at Bellerive Oval. But they’ll have to do it without one of their most exciting young match-winners.
