West Indies opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul has been ruled out of the playing XI from the second Test of the three-match series against New Zealand. Mere minutes prior to the launch of the match at Wellington’s Basin Reserve, West Indies Cricket confirmed the development, stating that the 29-year-old suffered a side strain while practising in the nets.

Chanderpaul was replaced by West Indies white-ball specialist Brandon King, who opened the innings with John Campbell on Day 1 and forged a 66-run stand in 17 overs.

West Indies lose Tagenarine Chanderpaul after fighting draw

West Indies took field against New Zealand in Wellington on December 10 without the services of opening batter Tagenarine Chanderpaul. Prior to the match, Chanderpaul suffered an injury while playing a shot in the nets, and is currently benched due to a side strain.

As of now, it remains to be seen if the 29-year-old will attain recovery by the time of the series-deciding third Test against New Zealand next week at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.

In the first Test in Christchurch earlier this month, Tagenarine Chanderpaul composed a courageous 52 off 169 balls in the first innings, at a time when West Indies bundled out for just 167 to hand a 64-run lead to the hosts. While he failed to bat beyond 45 deliveries in the second innings, West Indies conjured a fighting draw by reaching 457-6 in a chase of 531 courtesy of grand centuries from Shai Hope and Justin Greaves.

Nonetheless, in the absence of Tagenarine Chanderpaul, West Indies folded up for just 205 on Day 1 of the second Test against New Zealand. His replacement Brandon King scored 33 off 55 balls with five fours and a six. For New Zealand, Blair Tickner (4-32) and Michael Rae (3-67) picked up seven wickets between them before openers Tom Latham and Devon Conway survived the final nine overs of the day to reach 24-0.
