Senior Pakistan batter Mohammad Rizwan was forced to ‘retire out’ in a recent BBL 2025-26 match in Sydney. In other news, Taskin Ahmed’s injury concerns put his T20 World Cup 2026 availability in doubt.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Monday, January 12.
Ayush Badoni replaces injured Washington Sundar for NZ ODIs
Star all-rounder Washington Sundar has been ruled out of Team India squad for the remainder of their three-match home ODI series against New Zealand. The cricketer sustained a side strain injury during the series-opening first ODI match in Baroda.
The BCCI selection committee has now named Delhi cricketer and LSG star Ayush Badoni as Washington Sundar’s replacement for the remaining two ODIs. Badoni was picked in the team following his impressive all-round run for Delhi in India’s 2025-26 domestic season.
ICC rules in favour of Bangladesh over India travel, claims Youth and Sports Adviser
Bangladesh’s Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Nazrul has claimed that the ICC has ruled in favour of Bangladesh, in regards to the BCB’s security concerns in sending the Bangladesh team to India for next month’s 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. While speaking with the reporters, Nazrul said that the ICC security team has sent a letter to the BCB, which the Bangladesh board will be unveiling in due time.
The BCB has also rejected ICC’s counter offer of shifting Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup 2026 matches to another Indian venue, thus re-affirming their demand of playing in Sri Lanka instead.
Mohammad Rizwan forced to retire out as Pakistan’s flop show continues in BBL
Melbourne Renegades’ Pakistan import Mohammad Rizwan was forced to be ‘retired out’ by his captain Will Sutherland in match number 33 of the BBL 2025-26 season against Sydney Thunder in Sydney. Batting at number four, the seasoned wicketkeeper-batter struggled to reach 26* off 23 balls by the end of the 18th over of the innings, thus maintaining a strike rate of just 113.04.
Rizwan’s latest setback became the latest in a series of underwhelming returns by Pakistani players this BBL season in Australia, with the likes of Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi and others failing to leave a telling impact.
Scott Edwards to lead Netherlands squad in T20 World Cup 2026
Cricket Netherlands unveiled Netherlands’ 15-player squad for the upcoming 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next month. Senior wicketkeeper-batter Scott Edwards will be reprising his role as Netherlands captain, and he will be accompanied by fellow star attractions like Colin Ackermann, Roelof van der Merwe, Max O'Dowd, Paul van Meekeren and others.
Indian-origin opening batter Vikramjit Singh was dropped from the squad following his lean patch with the bat last year.
Taskin Ahmed in doubt for T20 World Cup after BPL 2025-26 injury
Bangladesh fast bowler Taskin Ahmed will likely be ruled out of the remaining BPL 2025-26 season owing to his injury concern. The speedster also missed Dhaka Capitals’ previous two matches, considering he last turned up for the franchise back on January 8 for a match against Sylhet Titans in Sylhet.
Dhaka Capitals captain Mohammad Mithun has also confirmed that Taskin Ahmed has been experiencing knee troubles off late. As of now, it remains to be seen if the senior pacer will attain full recovery in time for next month’s 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
