Babar Azam had a disappointing outing with the bat during the Big Bash League (BBL 2025–26) match at the International Sports Stadium in Coffs on Monday, January 5. The star Pakistan batter managed to score only 2 runs before getting out, which made it a forgettable day for him.

The Brisbane Heat batted first and set a modest target of 114 runs. After this, Babar Azam walked out to open the innings along with Daniel Hughes.

Given the low score on the board and his decent season so far, there was hope that Babar would play a key role in the chase. The situation looked calm in the early overs, and the batting side aimed to settle quickly.

Oliver Patterson removes Babar Azam in no time

However in the third over of the innings, Oliver Patterson came on to bowl. He delivered a full ball that swung into Babar.

As a result, Babar tried to flick the ball toward deep square leg. The fielder moved in swiftly and took a clean catch. This brought an early end to Babar’s innings, as he scored 2 runs from 7 balls. At that stage, the team score read 15 for 1.

Earlier in the match, Brisbane Heat struggled to post a big total. Jack Wildermuth played a quick knock and scored 31 runs from 17 balls, which gave the innings some momentum. Along with him, Hugh Weibgen contributed 24 runs and helped push the score to 114.

The Sydney Sixers bowlers enjoyed a successful day. Ben Dwarshuis, Sean Abbott, and Joel Davies each picked up two wickets. Their disciplined bowling kept the Heat batters under control throughout the innings.

Babar Azam’s BBL numbers so far

So far in the league, Babar Azam has scored 131 runs in six innings. His strike rate stands at 111.97, along with an average of 26.20. These numbers have sparked discussions among former players and experts. It is important to note that Adam Gilchrist has openly spoken about Babar’s slow batting approach.

Meanwhile, reports from last week suggest that Babar Azam is likely to be part of Pakistan’s plans for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026. The event will be hosted jointly by India and Sri Lanka.

It is worth mentioning that Pakistan’s senior selectors have included Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Shadab Khan in a preliminary 20-player squad. Mohammad Rizwan has not been included at this stage.

What lies ahead for Pakistan

The Pakistan Cricket Board has already submitted this preliminary squad to the ICC before the January 7 deadline. Head coach Mike Hesson will soon trim the squad down to 15 players.

Most teams have already announced their squads, and changes are allowed until January 31. The tournament will run from February 7 to March 8. Pakistan will play all their matches in Sri Lanka under an agreed formula, which was approved last year.
