SRH has been eliminated from the race for the playoffs of the IPL 2025 season owing to a no-result against Delhi Capitals. CSK and SRH franchises signed in new recruits as replacement players for the remainder of the season. In other news, Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has received an email death threat.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Monday, May 5.
Cummins’ Three-Fer In Vain As SRH Vs DC Abandoned
SRH’s all-important home fixture against Delhi Capitals in Hyderabad in match 55 of the IPL 2025 season got abandoned at its halfway stage. SRH skipper Pat Cummins started off the match with three wickets in each of his first three overs to claim astonishing figures of 3-19.
After slipping to 29-5, the Capitals reached a competitive 133-7 by the completion of their 20 overs, courtesy of fighting knocks from Tristan Stubbs (41* off 36) and Ashutosh Sharma (41 off 26). Heavy rains during the mid-innings break prompted match officials to call off play. As it turned out, the outcome also dashed SRH’s prospects of a playoffs qualification.
CSK Sign Urvil Patel As Vansh Bedi’s Replacement
The CSK franchise has roped in Gujarat wicketkeeper-batter Urvil Patel as a replacement of Vansh Bedi for the remainder of the ongoing IPL 2025 season. Urvil, aged 26, was part of the Gujarat Titans group back during the 2023 edition of the tournament. However, he is yet to play a single IPL match to date. It is worth noting that Patel went unsold at the IPL 2025 mega auction back in November last year. In his 47-match T20 career, the cricketer has scored over 1,000 runs at a staggering strike rate of 170.38 with two tons and four half-centuries.
SRH Name Harsh Dubey As Smaran’s Replacement
Vidarbha’s bowling all-rounder Harsh Dubey has joined the SRH franchise for the remainder of the IPL 2025 season as an injury replacement for Smaran Ravichandran. Notably, Smaran himself walked into the SRH team as a replacement for Australian spinner Adam Zampa.
Yet to make his IPL debut, Dubey has played 16 T20 matches in his career. He has also played an additional 18 first-class matches and 20 List A games since his competitive cricket debut in early-2021.
Kagiso Rabada Cleared To Play IPL 2025 For GT
South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has been cleared to play the remainder of the IPL 2025 season for the Gujarat Titans. It is worth noting that after playing just a couple of games for the Titans, Rabada returned back to South Africa citing personal reasons. However, it was later revealed that his absence was a “provisional suspension” after testing positive for a recreational drug. Rabada is expected to get back into the Titans line-up for IPL 2025, and is also cleared to play the WTC 2025 final for South Africa against Australia.
Mohammed Shami Receives Death Threat
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Shami has received a death threat via e-mail, as reported by sports journalist Abhishek Tripathi. The sender, named Rajput Sindhar, demanded a sum of Rs. 1 crore from the legendary speedster. Shami’s brother Mohammed Haseeb read the mail and informed SP of Amroha about the matter. The police are currently probing the threat and an FIR has already been filed.
Earlier, Mohammed Shami’s national coach Gautam Gambhir also received a death threat, prompting the former Indian cricketer to approach Delhi police.
