From Indian Idol To IPL 2025: Meet Parashar Joshi, Singer Who Turned Umpire

Parashar Joshi is currently officiating in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025) season as one of the umpires appointed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). With an appearance resembling to current Punjab Kings skipper and ace Indian batter Shreyas Iyer, Joshi became a talk of India’s cricketing fraternity during a WPL match last year.

However, it is worth noting that Parashar Joshi also hogged the limelight, albeit in a different field, 17 years ago back in 2008 on the popular Indian television show, Indian Idol. Here, we take a brief look at Joshi’s journey from an aspiring cricketer, to an Indian Idol contestant to one of the BCCI-appointed umpires.

Who is Parashar Joshi?

Parashar Joshi, a fan of Sachin Tendulkar, played club cricket in Pune as a teenager back in 2005. However, he also simultaneously tried his hand to get into the Indian Idol stage, eventually hogging the limelight in 2008. Joshi made it to the second round of the show, where he met the likes of legendary Indian musical artists like Kailash Kher, Anul Malik and Javed Akhtar.

On the academic front, he completed his engineering in computer from Pune Institute of Computer Technology. Joshi also cracked several umpiring exams and was eventually selected in the BCCI’s panel of umpires back in 2015.

During the 2024 season of the WPL, Parashar Joshi went viral on social media for resembling senior Indian batter Shreyas Iyer. He also recently made his IPL debut in the ongoing 2025 season during a match between MS Dhoni’s CSK and Axar Patel’s Delhi Capitals in Chennai on April 5.

Furthermore, Joshi frequently uploads videos of his music on his social media accounts, and he currently has over 13,000 listeners on Spotify.
