South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is all set to return for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the IPL 2025. He might even feature in GT’s upcoming match against the Mumbai Indians on May 5.  Originally, it was a three-month ban, but it was reduced to just one month after he joined a drug education and awareness program.

That ban lasted from April 3 to May 3. Now that it’s over, he’s allowed to play again.

Why Rabada Missed GT Matches?

Rabada had returned to South Africa recently, and at that time, the said he had gone back home for personal reasons after playing just two matches in the season. But later, it was revealed that he was actually under a “provisional suspension” after testing positive for a recreational drug.

According to ESPN, the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) confirmed that Rabada failed a doping test on January 21 after a game between MI Cape Town and Durban Super Giants

“Substances of abuse are substances that are identified as such because they are frequently abused in society outside the context of sport. “The following are designated substances of abuse – cocaine, heroin, MDMA/’ecstasy, THC,” read Monday’s statement from SAIDS.

“A provisional suspension was imposed and Rabada returned immediately to South Africa from India. Rabada accepted responsibility for the doping offence and honoured his provisional suspension.”

"He is allowed to resume playing immediately."

It is also important to note that he is also available for South Africa in the 2025 ICC World Test Championship final against Australia next month.

Kagiso Rabada’s IPL 2025 Journey So Far

So far in IPL 2025, Rabada has played two matches for GT and taken two wickets. GT captain Shubman Gill recently shared that the team was hoping Rabada would return in 10 to 12 days, and now it looks like that might actually happen just in time for their next big match against Mumbai Indians.

Gujarat Titans had bought Kagiso Rabada for a whopping INR 10.75 crore during the mega auction held in Saudi Arabia in November 2024.
