Delhi Capitals gained a crucial point vs SRH [Source: @iplt20.com]
Sometimes, it is not a six or a wicket that saves your season, it is a raincloud. Delhi Capitals might just have dodged a bullet in Hyderabad as their clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad ended in a no-result.
After a top-order collapse left them reeling at 133/7 in 20 overs, the writing looked to be on the wall. Defending such a modest total on a decent batting wicket, especially with SRH’s explosive top order waiting in the wings, would have been an uphill task.
How Delhi Capitals Can Still Make the IPL 2025 Playoffs?
But just when it seemed like DC’s momentum was about to hit a wall, the rain came down hard, forcing the match to be abandoned and gifting Delhi a point that could prove to be gold dust in the playoff race.
With that washed-out result, Delhi Capitals now sit on 13 points from 11 matches. They have six wins, four losses, and that all-important no-result to their name. Crucially, they also boast a healthy net run rate of +0.362, which could be a major advantage if the race for the final four comes down to tight margins. But there’s no room for comfort. The path ahead is clear, but not easy.
Delhi Capitals have three matches left in the league stage, against Punjab Kings on May 8 in Dharamsala, Gujarat Titans on May 11 at home and Mumbai Indians on May 15 at the Wankhede. These are not just any games, they are virtual quarterfinals, considering all three opponents are also in the playoff hunt.
If DC Win All 3 Matches (Finish On 19 Points)
If Delhi can win all three of these matches, they will finish with 19 points which should comfortably secure a place in the playoffs and possibly even give them a shot at a Top 2 finish. In that scenario, they would have directly defeated PBKS, GT and MI, effectively pushing them down while climbing up the ladder themselves. This is the dream route.
If DC Win 2 of 3 (Finish On 17 Points)
But even if they manage to win just two out of the three games, they will reach 17 points. That’s still a strong tally and historically good enough to make the playoffs. In that case, their net run rate becomes crucial which they will have to keep boosting.
If DC Win Just 1 (Finish On 15 Points)
The trouble begins if Axar Patel-led Delhi win only one of their last three and the Mumbai Indians and Gujarat Titans win one more game. That would leave them stranded at 15 points, and they will be knocked out.
If DC Lose All 3 (Stay At 13 Points)
A complete collapse in these final games, of course, ends their season. Thirteen points won’t be enough given how closely packed the table is.
DC Will Aim To Win All Their Games
From here on, every match is a must-win or at the very least, a must-not-lose-badly. DC can’t afford another slip-up. They have had their lucky break with the rain in Hyderabad, but now it is all about backing it up with performances.
Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and Mumbai Indians won’t hand anything on a plate. But the beauty of this scenario for Delhi is that they still have control over their destiny. Beat the teams around you and you punch your ticket to the knockouts.
