Virat Kohli among other Indian cricketers celebrate India’s Independence Day. The ECB named squads for England’s upcoming white-ball fixtures against South Africa and Ireland. In other news, India A Women upstaged Australia in Brisbane to clinch the three-match One-Day series with a game to spare.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Friday, August 15.
Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma Lead Independence Day Celebration
A multitude of former and active Indian cricketers celebrated India’s Independence Day on Friday, August 15. Indian captain Rohit Sharma as well as modern-day batting behemoth Virat Kohli took to their social media accounts to celebrate the auspicious day with patriotic posts. Former players like Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Irfan Pathan and India’s active white-ball superstars like Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma and T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav also shared heartfelt messages and images, joining the nation in commemorating 78 years of freedom.
Babar Azam, Rizwan Doubtful For Asia Cup 2025: Report
Pakistan batting greats Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan are reportedly doubtful to make it to the national squad for the upcoming 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup in the UAE. With Babar and Rizwan in the team, the ‘Men in Green’ recently crashed to a humiliating 1-2 series defeat against the West Indies in the Caribbean earlier this month.
While the PCB is yet to finalise a squad for the 2025 Asia Cup, certain reports indicate that the board has moved on from the two batting icons for the shortest form of the game.
Harry Brook, Bethell To Lead England Vs SA, Ireland
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has named England’s squads for the upcoming ODI and T20I series against South Africa at home; and for the three-match away ODI series against Ireland. Harry Brook is set to continue as England captain for the white-ball fixtures against South Africa, where he will be accompanied by fellow senior pros like Joe Root (only ODIs), Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer, Ben Duckett, Adil Rashid among others.
Brook, Archer and Duckett, however, will be rested for the series against Ireland, with ECB naming young Jacob Bethell as interim captain for the tour.
Shreyas Iyer, Jaiswal Not In BCCI’s Asia Cup 2025 Plans: Report
Shreyas Iyer and Yashasvi Jaiswal are reportedly not in BCCI’s agenda for national selection for the upcoming 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup in the UAE. It is worth noting that Shreyas led Punjab Kings into the final in this year’s IPL 2025 season, and even plundered over 600 runs with the bat at a prolific average of 50.33. Jaiswal also aggregated 559 runs in the league at 43 with a strike rate of nearly 160.
According to a TOI report, Shreyas Iyer is yet to justify a spot in the Indian team for T20Is. On the other hand, the BCCI wants Yashasvi Jaiswal to focus on red-ball cricket for the time being.
Yastika, Radha, Tanuja And Minnu Script IND-A Series Win Over Healy-Starrer AUS
India A Women pipped their Australian counterparts by two wickets with a ball to spare in the second One-Day game in Brisbane to clinch the three-match series. Australia A Women batted first and conjured 265-9 from 50 overs, with Alyssa Healy cracking 91 runs off just 87 balls. For India, Minnu Mani picked up three wickets to finish her spell with figures of 3-46.
In response, opener Yastika Bhatia, captain Radha Yadav and lower-order batter Tanuja Kanwar also listed cunning half-centuries to anchor the Indian run-chase.
