Virat Kohli has debunked rumors of his ODI retirement with a couple of interesting social media activities. Nicholas Pooran has been named as the new captain of the Trinbago Knight Riders franchise. In other news, Indian Test captain Shubman Gill has earned a significant praise from mentor and former cricketer Yuvraj Singh for his heroics in England.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Thursday, August 14.

Virat Kohli Squashes ODI Retirement Rumours

Legendary Indian batter Virat Kohli has squashed all rumors of his ODI retirement through a recent social media activity. While the cricketer announced his T20I retirement last year after winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, and quietly exited from Tests following his lean patch with the bat a couple of months ago, several reports indicated that the seasoned Indian middle-order batter will also call it quits from 50-overs within the next few months itself.

However, Virat Kohli has now expressed his readiness in playing India’s next ODI series. He posted a picture of himself alongside Gujarat Titans assistant coach Naeem Amin on his Instagram, and captioned it by writing: “Thanks for helping out with the hit, brother. Always lovely to see you.” Kohli also liked a post on a fan page which indicated that he will be playing the series against Australia.

Yuvraj Singh Praises Shubman Gill For England Heroics

Former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh expressed his admirations for protégé and newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill. While speaking with ICC Digital, Yuvraj claimed that by plundering four hundreds in England, Shubman managed to silence all his doubters and naysayers who had initially questioned his overseas batting record. The legendary Indian all-rounder and multi-World Cup-winner also praised the Indian team for securing a fighting drawn Test series against the Englishmen.

Mohammad Amir To Leave Hundred For CPL

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir is set to miss the rest of The Hundred 2025 season in England to join the Trinbago Knight Riders franchise in the CPL 2025 season in the Caribbean. Amir has so far played just a couple of Hundred matches for the Northern Superchargers franchise, picking up a solitary wicket at an expensive bowling average of 52.

The 33-year-old will now be joining the Trinbago Knight Riders, where he will be accompanied by several T20 greats like Kieron Pollard, Andre Russell, Nicholas Pooran and Sunil Narine.

Pooran Replaces Pollard As TKR Captain For CPL 2025

Nicholas Pooran has been appointed as the new captain of the Trinbago Knight Riders franchise for the upcoming CPL 2025 season. The blistering wicketkeeper-batter will be replacing his senior colleague and fellow T20 behemoth Kieron Pollard, who led the team last year.

Under the leadership of Nicholas Pooran, the Trinbago Knight Riders will play their opening match of the CPL 2025 season on August 17 against the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots at the Warner Park Sporting Complex in St Kitts.

Owen Concussed, Short And Morris Ruled Out As AUS Revamp Squad

Cricket Australia has revamped its ODI squad to a certain extent for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa following injuries to key players. All-rounder Mitchell Owen, who was primed for an ODI debut, has been ruled out of the series owing to a concussion. Matt Short and Lance Morris have also been ruled out owing to their respective injuries.

Players like Aaron Hardie, Cooper Connolly and Matt Kuhnemann have now been drafted into the Australian squad as replacements. The first ODI between the two sides is scheduled to be played on August 19 in Cairns.
