Rohit Sharma struggle with declining form [Source: @cricbuzz/X.com]
Rohit Sharma in Test cricket in 2024 has been struggling to make an impact, which has become a significant concern. The Indian captain faced yet another setback in the ongoing three-match Test series against Kiwis.
In the third Test in Mumbai, Rohit’s struggle for runs persisted, even on his home ground, Wankhede Stadium. While chasing a target of 147, Rohit, alongside his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, walked out determined but fell early in the third over. Attempting to play a signature pull shot off Matt Henry’s short-pitched delivery, Rohit only managed a top edge that was caught brilliantly by Glenn Phillips running backwards.
Rohit has managed to score 91 runs in six innings during this series, averaging 15.17. Excluding a 52-run effort in the second innings of Bengaluru Test, he has consistently struggled to find stability against New Zealand's bowlers. His overall Test average for 2024 has dropped below 30 (29.40), the lowest for him in a calendar year since he started opening in 2019. Ironically, this year has been his best in T20 cricket, where he has an impressive average of 36.13 and a strike rate of 154.66 – both career highs for a single year.
Rohit’s difficulties in Test cricket weren’t limited to the New Zealand series. In the earlier series against Bangladesh, he scored 42 runs at an average of 10.50.
India Half Down In Tricky Chase
Meanwhile, New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel has made crucial inroads in the ongoing match, dismissing Sarfaraz Khan, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill cheaply. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja are now looking to build a stable partnership as India, five wickets down, attempts to chase down the target of 147 runs.
