Indian captain Rohit Sharma was once again dismissed cheaply as Matt Henry sent him packing for 18 off 18 balls in the third Test at Mumbai. His average in Test cricket since embracing captaincy has been falling rapidly which drew negative criticism from the fans on the internet.

After losing the toss, team India bowled brilliantly to restrict New Zealand to 235 in the first innings of the third Test currently underway in Mumbai. Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar grabbed 9 wickets in total, with the former bagging a fifer. Now, the onus was on batters to respond with intent and gain advantage. Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal walked out to open amid Mumbai’s humid conditions.

However, Indian captain Rohit Sharma once again failed to step up. He has been off-colour throughout the series and his ill-form extended into the third Test as well. Despite getting dropped more than once, Rohit couldn’t utilise his lifelines. He was looking to attack Matt Henry to the on-side. However, the cutter derived extra bounce from the surface, and Rohit certainly didn’t see it coming. He got stuck in an awkward position as a leading edge was caught by Tom Latham in slips.

Rohit Sharma had a glance at the surface and walked back in disappointment. However, the fans on Twitter were more frustrated than ever. Some users pointed out how Rohit’s average has been falling since three years and his recent form is far from the expectations.

Many even accused Rohit Sharma of exploiting the captaincy designation as anyone in his place would have been dropped by now. Not only that, with the five-game Test series against Australia just around the corner, Rohit’s struggles against pace bowling is a matter of concern for the fans.

That being said, Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly failing to meet his standards as an opener. However, post his dismissal, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill held their ground to knit a stable partnership for the second wicket. Jaiswal, in particular, has shown great intent and hopefully can convert it into a big score which is long due.
