Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma registered another set of batting failures against New Zealand, this time by letting their team down at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. After scoring just 22 runs between them during the first innings of the match, Kohli and Sharma were dismissed for scores of just 1 and 11 while chasing 147 to avoid a rare series whitewash at home.

Following their latest dismal show, a legion of Indian cricket fans took to social media and wrathfully demanded for the Test retirements of the two modern-day batting greats.

Netizens demand retirements of Kohli and Rohit

Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma spent the entirety of India’s three-match home Test series against New Zealand by notching up just a single fifty-plus score each. Moreover, Kohli and Sharma tallied just 93 and 91 runs respectively across six innings of the series at a substandard batting average of just a tad above 15.

Their collective batting failures not only compounded in India’s rare series defeat at home, but also rang alarming bells ahead of the team’s high-profile Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour of Australia in November. Furthermore, Team India’s 2023-25 WTC prospects took a massive hit, as they lost crucial points on offer during the series.

As it turned out, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma bore the wrath of several Indian cricket fans on social media for their horror show against New Zealand. Taking to X, a number of fans either made hilarious memes at the expense of the two ageing warriors, or called for their Test retirements. Here is a look at some of the fans reacting to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s perpetual batting worries.

Indian bowlers Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin skittled New Zealand’s entire line-up for just 174 in the second innings. Chasing 147 runs for a win, Team India lost openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal as well as middle-order batters Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli and Sarfaraz Khan in quick succession inside the opening hour.
