Jos Buttler in action during IPL 2025 [Source: @sarcastic_us/x]
Jos Buttler is set to leave the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season for the Gujarat Titans just before the playoffs. Earlier this month, IPL 2025 was put on hold by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) citing security concerns and India’s cross-border tensions with Pakistan.
As it turns out, a delayed resumption of IPL 2025 has now cast doubt over the availability of several overseas stars, including former England captain Jos Buttler. Here, we take a look at why exactly Buttler has decided not to remain with the Titans till the end of the season.
Why Jos Buttler will leave Gujarat Titans?
Jos Buttler will be leaving Gujarat Titans before the IPL 2025 playoffs to join the English cricket team back home. As per the revised IPL 2025 schedule, the playoffs will launch from May 29 onwards in India. Notably, England’s home ODI series against West Indies will also commence from the same day in Edgbaston, Birmingham.
The Gujarat Titans franchise has already qualified for the playoffs by securing eight wins at an expense of just three defeats from 11 matches. Jos Buttler has played a significant role in Titans’ qualification, having plundered 500 runs in just 11 innings of the tournament at a stupendous average of 71.42.
He has listed five half-centuries in the process, and has maintained a staggering strike rate of 163.93.
Gujarat Titans name Jos Buttler’s replacement
On May 15, the Gujarat Titans franchise named Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis as a replacement for outgoing Jos Buttler. The availability of Mendis will be effective from May 26 onwards.
With IPL 2025 resumption nearing by, the Gujarat Titans will now face Delhi Capitals on Sunday, May 18 in Delhi.
