The ‘Rohit Sharma Stand’ inauguration ceremony is just a day away at the Wankhede Stadium. Earlier this month, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) confirmed that the ceremony will now be taking place on Friday, May 16 at the iconic venue, i.e., just a day prior to the relaunch of the IPL 2025 season.
The ceremony was initially scheduled to be organized on Tuesday, May 13, however, the IPL 2025 season got suspended by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for over a week citing security concerns and India’s geopolitical tensions with Pakistan.
Rohit Sharma Stand ceremony on May 16
The ’Rohit Sharma Stand’ inauguration ceremony will be organized on Friday, May 16 from 4 PM IST onwards at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The revised scheduled was confirmed earlier this week when India’s cross-border tensions with Pakistan were beginning to ease out.
Back on April 15 last month during MCA's 86th Annual General Meeting, the association originally decided to honour the legendary Indian captain and Mumbai cricket great by naming a stand after him.
Rohit Sharma, a T20 World Cup and a Champions Trophy winning captain for Team India, is currently plying his trade for the Mumbai Indians franchise in the ongoing IPL 2025 season. Earlier this month, he announced his retirement from Test cricket.
The legendary opener has so far accrued 300 runs in 11 innings of the tournament at a splendid strike rate of 152.28 and at a healthy average of 30.
Once the IPL 2025 resumes on May 17 in Bengaluru, Rohit Sharma is slated to reprise his role for the Mumbai Indians franchise with a match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday, May 21 at the Wankhede Stadium.
