Delhi Capitals’ star pacer Mitchell Starc may face a significant financial blow after deciding to skip the remainder of the IPL 2025 season to focus on the upcoming World Test Championship Final against South Africa and not return to India after escalating tension between India and Pakistan.
It is important to note that Mitchell Starc has officially pulled out of the ongoing IPL 2025 season. The 35-year-old left-arm fast bowler will now shift his focus to the WTC Final, where Australia will take on South Africa at Lord’s.
Starc’s decision comes in the wake of an unusual mid-season interruption of IPL 2025, which saw the tournament paused and then extended by a week. With the rescheduled matches now clashing with Australia’s preparations for the WTC Final, the seasoned pacer has chosen national duty over franchise cricket.
Mitchell Starc To Face Financial Fallout
Starc was signed by Delhi Capitals for a staggering INR 11.75 crore at the IPL 2025 mega auction. According to cricket.com.au, players in the IPL are paid on a pro-rata basis for the number of matches they are available for.
With Starc exiting before the final leg of the tournament, he stands to lose one-third of his total contract value if Delhi Capitals qualify for the finals.
That means Starc could face penalty around INR 3.92 crore, reducing his take-home pay to approximately INR 7.83 crore. Even if the Capitals fail to reach the playoffs, he may still face $450,000 (approx. INR 3.7 crore) loss, depending on how many games he misses.
Why DC Will Miss Starc In Rest Of IPL?
Mitchell Starc was of the main players for Axar Patel-led Delhi Capitals in the bowling attack. He has taken 14 wickets in 11 matches, including a five-wicket haul.
Despite his expensive economy rate, his ability to take wickets at crucial overs make him an integral part of the team’s plans. His absence will undoubtedly affect DC's bowling strength in this critical phase of the tournament.
The team is currently fifth in the IPL 2025 Points Table and are in the thick of the playoff race. With three games remaining, they must win at least two to keep their qualification hopes alive.
