Punjab Kings batters made lightwork of LSG’s competitive total in Lucknow in match 13 of the IPL 2025 season. Rob Walter tendered his resignation as the white-ball coach of the South African team. In other news, Cricket Australia has announced its central contract list.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Tuesday, April 1.
Prabhsimran, Shreyas Overhaul LSG With Ease
Punjab Kings consigned host Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) to an eight-wicket drubbing at Ekana Stadium in match 13 of the IPL 2025 season. Fast bowlers Arshdeep Singh (3-43) and Lockie Ferguson (1-26) picked up a wicket each in the powerplay before Nicholas Pooran (44 off 30) and Ayush Badoni (41 off 33) counterattacked with sizzling 40s. Abdul Samad provided the death-overs impetus with a 12-ball 27 as LSG conjured a competitive 171-7 from 20 overs.
Chasing 172, Prabhsimran Singh blasted 69 from just 34 balls with nine boundaries and three sixes after the early loss of opening partner Priyansh Arya. Captain Shreyas Iyer (52* off 30) and number four Nehal Wadhera (43* off 25) subsequently steered Punjab Kings to an easy win in just 16.2 overs.
Rob Walter Steps Down As SA Coach
South Africa’s white-ball coach Rob Walter has decided to step down from his post citing personal reasons, as announced by CSA on April 1. The CSA also confirmed that Walter’s tenure will come to a conclusion on April 30.
Under his guidance, the South African team reached the finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies, and qualified for the semifinals of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. Walter also supervised South Africa to an emphatic semifinal campaign at the 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup in India in late 2023.
Charlotte Edwards Named ENG Women Coach
Former England captain Charlotte Edwards has been appointed as the new head coach of the English women’s cricket team. The 45-year-old will be replacing previous coach Jon Lewis, considering the England team recently lost the 2025 Women’s Ashes by a thumping 16-0 margin in Australia.
During her playing days, Edwards led England to a comprehensive victory in the inaugural edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup back in 2009. A veteran of 23 Tests, 191 ODIs and 95 T20Is, the cricketer tallied over 10,000 runs with the bat during her playing days.
Konstas, Kuhnemann, Webster Added To CA’s Central Contract
Cricket Australia released its central contract list for the 2025-26 season. Sam Konstas, Matt Kuhnemann and Beau Webster became new additions to the list owing to their stellar performances off late. Senior pros like captain Pat Cummins, fellow fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc; spin masters Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa; all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh as well as legendary batters Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith and Travis Head among others managed to retain their places.
Tim Seifert Replaces Chapman For 2nd NZ Vs PAK ODI
In-form Mark Chapman has been ruled out of New Zealand’s line-up for the upcoming second ODI match against Pakistan. After cracking a match-winning 132 in the series opener, the cricketer has now been sidelined owing to a right hamstring injury.
Chapman’s injury has prompted New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to recall explosive T20I opener and forgotten ODI star Tim Seifert into the team. Seifert recently delivered a ‘Player of the Series’ performance with 249 runs in New Zealand’s 4-1 T20I win over Pakistan at home. The 30-year-old last played an ODI match back in early 2019, i.e., more than six years ago.
