Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Thursday, February 27.
Pakistan Remain Winless After Bangladesh Washout
Pakistan’s final Group A match of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy against Bangladesh at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium was abandoned without a ball being bowled. The soddened affair ensured that the ‘Men in Green’ remained winless to bow out of the competition in front of their home crowd.
Moreover, under the leadership of Mohammad Rizwan, the Pakistan team also finished at the bottom of the Group A points table, as their NRR of -1.087 fell below that of Bangladesh’s -0.443 after falling to successive defeats against New Zealand and India in Karachi and Dubai respectively.
Shubman Gill Trains On Rest Day Before India vs NZ
Indian vice-captain Shubman Gill attended the ICC Academy in Dubai for an “informal training session”. Even though the day was designated a ‘rest day’ for the Indian team, Gill was accompanied by throwdown specialists and several other members of the support staff in a bid to prepare for the upcoming 2025 ICC Champions Trophy match against New Zealand.
The 25-year-old recently punched out match-winning scores of 101* and 46 against Bangladesh and Pakistan respectively as Team India qualified for the semifinals of the tournament.
Asia Cup 2025 Likely To Shift Out Of India: Reports
The Asia Cup 2025, or at least a part of the tournament, will likely be shifted out of India owing to the BCCI-PCB pact that was formed prior to the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. Owing to India’s refusal of travelling to Pakistan for the ongoing Champions Trophy event, the PCB also stated that no ‘Men in Green’ team will be travelling to India for future multi-nation tournaments.
The 2025 edition of the Asia Cup will be played in a T20I format, and was originally set to be hosted in its entirety by India later this year.
Kevin Pietersen Joins Delhi Capitals As Mentor
Kevin Pietersen has been appointed as the team mentor of the Delhi Capitals franchise for the upcoming IPL 2025 season. The former English captain will be joining the likes of Hemang Badani (head coach), Munaf Patel (bowling coach), Matthew Mott (assistant coach) and Venugopal Rao (director of cricket) in the support staff of the team.
Pietersen also played a couple of seasons for the Delhi Capitals franchise back in 2012 and 2014. As a mentor, one of the major roles for the former England cricketer will be to nurture the emerging talents of the Capitals line-up in a bid to prepare them for the future.
Ashleigh Gardner-Inspired Gujarat Giants Stun RCB
Gujarat Giants stunned defending champions RCB by six wickets in match number 12 of the WPL 2025 season in Bengaluru. Batting first, the RCB accrued just 125-7 from 20 overs, with Kanika Ahuja’s mere 33-run effort turning out to be the biggest benefactor of the innings. For the Giants, captain Ashleigh Gardner picked up the wicket of in-form Ellyse Perry, while Deandra Dottin and Tanuja Kanwar chipped in with two wickets each.
In response, Gardner bludgeoned 58 runs off just 31 balls with six boundaries and three sixes. Phoebe Litchfield also belted an unbeaten 30* from 21 deliveries as Gujarat Giants romped to an easy win in just 16.3 overs.
