Prithvi Shaw has once again sparked speculation about his future after sharing a cryptic message on social media ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 resumption. The 25-year-old batter, once hailed as the future of Indian cricket, posted “NEED A BREAK” on his Instagram story on Wednesday.

The IPL 2025, which was temporarily suspended due to cross-border tensions between India and Pakistan, is set to resume on Saturday, May 17. As teams gear up for the continuation of the tournament. His post has come at a time when everyone is watching closely to see how players and franchises adjust to the revised schedule.

As the IPL resumes and teams prepare for a packed schedule concluding with the final on June 3. With the BCCI introducing a temporary replacement player rule to help franchises cope with player unavailability, there is a slight hope that Prithvi Shaw might be picked as a replacement. 

Prithvi Shaw's Dramatic IPL Career So Far

Shaw, who set his base price at ₹75 lakh for the IPL 2025 mega auction, went unsold after none of the franchises bid for him. He was last seen in the IPL in the 2024 season playing for DC, where he featured in just 8 matches, scoring 198 runs at an average of 24.75 and a strike-rate of 163.63. Following an underwhelming season, DC released him ahead of the 2025 edition.

Shaw made his IPL debut in 2018 and has played total 79 matches. The star batter has made 1,892 runs at an average of 23.94 and a strike-rate of 147.46. Despite this record, his recent form, coupled with recurring fitness concerns, has seen his stock fall rapidly.

In domestic cricket, Shaw was last seen playing during the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy for Mumbai, where he played nine matches and scored 197 runs at an average of 21.88 and a strike-rate of 156.34. His performance did not meet expectations and he was later dropped from the Mumbai squad due to fitness issues.

Prithvi Shaw's International Career

Internationally, Shaw’s early career showed promise. He has played five Test matches, scoring 339 runs at an average of 42.37, including a century and two fifties. In ODIs, he has managed 189 runs from six matches at an average of 31.50 and a strike-rate of 113.85. However, his last Test appearance came in 2020, and his most recent ODI and T20I outings were in 2021.
