With IPL mega auction on the horizon, rumours indicate that former captain MS Dhoni can extend his stint with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) next year, given the league allows maximum retention ahead of the auction.

MS Dhoni's association with CSK is one of the most iconic in the history of the IPL. Under his captaincy, CSK has won four IPL titles and consistently reached the playoffs, establishing a reputation for being one of the most successful and resilient teams in the tournament.

However, with MS Dhoni turning 43 this year, his physical fitness is on a decline, and hence, the ex-Indian cricketer handed over CSK's captaincy to successor Ruturaj Gaikwad earlier this year.

Moreover, speculations suggested that MS Dhoni might not continue playing IPL, given his deteriorating fitness standards.

However, as per Cricbuzz's latest report, MS Dhoni is mulling a return in 2025 for CSK given IPL allows maximum 5-6 retention in the upcoming mega auction. CSK are apparently prioritising retentions of youngsters first. Hence, if the league agree for a maximum limit over 5, Dhoni could be seen in yellow colours again.

Notably, IPL authorities and team owners have been at loggerheads over the maximum number of retention. While majority owners want to safeguard the core combination, IPL leadership is apparently not on the same page.

And if reports are to be believed, IPL is expected to conduct a brief meeting with all franchise owners soon wherein the agenda will include retention policy, IPL window and other factors related to the future of the league.
