As confirmed, the highly-awaited meeting of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners are all set for an official meeting on July 31st. The meeting is expected to take place at the Cricket Centre located in Mumbai's iconic Wankhede Stadium.

As per Cricbuzz, IPL's CEO Hemang Amin sent a text message regarding the meeting date to the various franchise owners and told them that a formal invite, including the venue and timing, would follow shortly after. It has also been understood that the meeting will occur in the late afternoon or evening, and all the owners have confirmed that they will be available.

The report stated that player retentions per team are still speculative in an attempt to clarify the retention procedure. However, BCCI will likely suggest an average number, possibly five or six.

The reason behind limiting retentions is that it would keep everyone on their toes, and the excitement of the auction would continue to build; if the teams were allowed to retain too many players, over 80% of the top players from all over the world, it wouldn't be as shining of an affair as it usually is.

The two sides of the retention coin have one side of owners suggesting that eight retentions are based on the need for continuity within teams, whereas the others suggest that retaining 5-6 players is sufficient to maintain a team's core.

Moreover, the RTM, or Right To Match, is a debatable issue. Although there are no RTMs in the 2021 mega-auction, some arguments in favour suggest that it allows players to be sold at their market value. However, the flip side is that some parties could inflate the prices of the players to make a profit.

The upcoming meeting is expected to clarify these issues.
