Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals secured comprehensive victories in the IPL 2025 season. New Zealand completed a 3-0 sweep over the visiting Pakistan team. In other news, Jasprit Bumrah and Saim Ayub are set to make their respective returns after injury layoffs.
Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Saturday, April 5.
KL Rahul, Nigam Crash CSK Despite Shankar’s 69*
Delhi Capitals registered a comprehensive 25-run win over Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in match number 17 of the IPL 2025 season at the Chepauk Stadium in Chennai. Batting first, the Capitals tallied 183-6 from 20 overs courtesy of a splendid 51-ball 77 from senior opening batter KL Rahul. Unbeaten Tristan Stubbs made his presence felt at the death with a swift 24-run cameo. For CSK, fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed picked up two wickets, including that of opener Jake Fraser-McGurk for a five-ball duck.
In response, CSK slipped to 74-5 around the halfway stage of the innings with the early exits of Rachin Ravindra, Ruturaj Gaikwad and others to Delhi Capitals’ new ball duo of Mitchell Starc and Mukesh Kumar as well as to spinners Vipraj Nigam and Kuldeep Yadav. Unbeaten Vijay Shankar whacked 69* from just 54 balls and went on to share 84 runs for the sixth wicket with MS Dhoni. However, their collective efforts merely reduced CSK’s defeat margin.
Jaiswal, Archer Go Big As RR Consign PBKS To First Defeat
Rajasthan Royals consigned Punjab Kings to a 50-run defeat at Mullanpur in match 18 of the IPL 2025 season. Fuelled by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s scintillating 45-ball 67, Riyan Parag’s unbeaten 43 and a well-compiled 38 from captain Sanju Samson; the Royals mounted 205-4 from 20 overs upfront.
Royals’ fast bowler Jofra Archer picked up the wickets of Priyansh Arya and Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer in the first over of the run-chase itself, before Sandeep Sharma (2-21) and Kumar Kartikeya (1-21) tore through the rest of the hosts’ middle-order. Nehal Wadhera clubbed 62 runs from just 41 balls for Punjab Kings as his 88-run partnership with Glenn Maxwell lifted them from 43-4 to 131-5. Late wickets for Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana eventually kept the Kings down to just 155-9 from 20 overs.
Bracewell, Ben Sears, Mariu Engineer NZ’s 3-0 Sweep Vs PAK
New Zealand outclassed Pakistan by 43 runs in a 42-overs-a-side third ODI at Mount Maunganui to complete a 3-0 sweep of the ‘Men in Green’. Getting invited to bat first, New Zealand formed 264-8 with half-centuries from opening batter Rhys Mariu and captain Michael Bracewell.
Pakistan’s batting misery this tour continued in the run-chase, with only Babar Azam recording a half-century in the innings. For the ‘Black Caps’, Ben Sears picked up his second five-wicket haul in succession while Jacob Duffy, Michael Bracewell, Muhammad Abbas and Daryl Mitchell mopped up the remaining wickets on offer to fold up Pakistan for just 221 in 40 overs.
Jasprit Bumrah To Join MI For RCB Game: Reports
Jasprit Bumrah will likely join the Mumbai Indians squad ahead of their IPL 2025 match against RCB. The legendary Indian fast bowler, who has been out of action since January this year owing to a back injury, was forced to miss the initial few weeks of the IPL 2025 season. As per recent reports, the speedster has received a fitness clearance from BCCI’s Centre of Excellence medical team after undergoing months in rehab.
Saim Ayub To Return For Peshawar Zalmi In PSL 2025
Pakistan cricketer Saim Ayub is set to make his return to competitive cricket through the upcoming PSL 2025 season for the Peshawar Zalmi. The youngster sustained an ankle injury back in South Africa in January this year, which kept him out of Pakistan’s Champions Trophy and New Zealand tour squads. While initial reports indicated that Ayub might miss the initial stage of PSL 2025, he will now be available from the first match for his franchise.
