Artificial intelligence (AI) is the future across all sectors, and it has also made its mark in cricket. IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has been utilising AI in this Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season to harness the best statistical insights and identify the key strengths of their players.

IIT Madras, one of India's premier engineering institutes, has developed an AI technology to enhance cricketing skills. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have utilised this AI to analyse their net bowlers, leveraging a vast array of data to gain valuable insights.

IIT Madras Centre of Excellence in Sports Science and Analytics (CESSA)-developed algorithm that can assess a player's impact in a game based on their performances. Many cricket-based and fantasy sports companies are already depending this technology to analyse various player data.

According to the AI's analysis, KKR's Sunil Narine has been identified as the most impactful player. The West Indies all-rounder has been opening the batting for KKR, scoring crucial powerplay runs, and taking important wickets.

"Our plan is to support around 30 sports tech startups every year. Over five years, we will groom nearly 200 such sports tech startups with the support of IIT Madras in the domain areas of computer vision, data analytics, AI, ML, and biomechanics," said Ramesh Kumar, chief executive officer of CESSA.
