Former Delhi cricketer Abhay Sharma will reportedly join the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) as their new fielding coach for next year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season. The 56-year-old has had prior coaching experience with the India Under-19 and Uganda national teams.
He also previously served as the fielding coach of the Indian Women’s cricket team, after he was appointed for the role back in 2021.
Abhay Sharma likely to replace Jonty Rhodes in LSG
Former Delhi and Railways cricketer Abhay Sharma will likely be appointed as LSG fielding coach for next year’s IPL 2026 season. In such a case, he will be joining LSG’s coaching staff, currently led by head coach and former Australian Test opener Justin Langer.
Abhay Sharma will be replacing former South African cricketer and fielding icon Jonty Rhodes, who served as LSG’s fielding coach between the 2023 and 2025 editions of the IPL.
In terms of coaching experience, Abhay Sharma helmed the Uganda cricket team as head coach during the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in USA and the West Indies last year. He was also the coach of India’s Under-19 team that lifted the 2018 ICC Under-19 World Cup.
A source close to the BCCI was quoted by the PTI as saying:
“Abhay has extensive experience working with the leading Indian cricketers and that should come in handy at LSG.”
Quite recently, the LSG franchise also appointed former Australian cricketer Tom Moody as their new Global Director of Cricket. The franchise also named legendary New Zealand batter Kane Williamson as their new strategic advisor in a huge support staff overhaul.
Earlier this year, under the leadership of Rishabh Pant, the LSG franchise secured just six wins and sustained eight defeats to finish seventh on the IPL 2025 points table. After making several changes in the team’s coaching setup, the owners will now head into the IPL 2026 auction with renewed intent and a revamped support staff, aiming to rebuild their squad and mount a stronger challenge for the coveted IPL title in the 2026 season.
