Team India clinched the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup last week at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai by defeating South Africa Women in a cracking finale. The outcome marked India’s first-ever ICC silverware in women’s cricket, making Harmanpreet Kaur just the third Indian captain after Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni to win a World Cup.
All-rounder Deepti Sharma, one of the masterminds behind India’s moment of glory, was fittingly adjudged the ‘Player of the Tournament’ for her heroics.
Deepti Sharma credits brother for fulfilling World Cup dream
They say behind every success story lies a silent supporter, and for Deepti Sharma, that unwavering force has always been her brother. While speaking to the ICC roughly a week after the conclusion of the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup, the legendary Indian all-rounder credited her brother Sumit Sharma for helping her pursue her dream.
Deepti Sharma said:
“I started playing cricket because of my brother. He made a lot of sacrifices for me; he left his job so that I could pursue my dream. On such a stage, in front of family, to perform well and lift the trophy feels truly special.”
On the day of the final, an in-form Deepti Sharma scored a run-a-ball 58 with the bat to push India’s total to a monumental 298-7 from 50 overs. Young Shafali Verma top-scored in the innings through her electrifying 87 from 78 balls with seven fours and two huge sixes.
Later in the game, Team India folded up South Africa for 246 in 45.3 overs to secure a comprehensive 52-run win. While Shafali picked up the important wickets of Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp; Deepti Sharma unfurled the spell of the game with sensational figures of 5-39.
For scoring 215 runs and picking up 22 wickets in the 2025 ICC Women’s World Cup, Deepti Sharma won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ award.
