In a recent development, Sanjiv Goenka, the owner of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), has confirmed the appointment of New Zealand star Kane Williamson as the new Strategic Advisor of the franchise ahead of the IPL 2026 season. Williamson, who has already represented the Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20, will now work behind the scenes for the franchise in the IPL.

The franchise finished seventh in the IPL 2025 season, and they will be eager to leave the past behind. Williamson’s sharp mind and strategies will help the team improve in the IPL 2026 season.

"Kane has been a part of the Super Giants family and it’s an absolute delight to welcome him in his new role as Strategic Advisor for @LucknowIPL. His leadership, strategic insight, deep understanding of the game, and ability to inspire players make him an invaluable addition to the team," LSG owner stated.

Williamson replaces Zaheer Khan, who was the mentor of the LSG side, but was removed after a disappointing campaign in 2025. Williamson remains an active cricketer, but the star has opted out of the New Zealand central contract as he prepares for a life outside the cricket field.

Williamson's IPL journey

The former New Zealand cricketer was known for his stint with the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and the former SRH captain also led the franchise to the IPL finale in 2018. In the same season, he accumulated 735 runs, with a strike rate of 142.44.

In his 79-game IPL journey, Williamson churned out 2128 runs, with an average of 35.47, and a strike rate of 125.62. He went unsold in the IPL 2025 auction, and in the last few years, his IPL career has been marred with injuries as teams have avoided to pick him in their squad.
