In the midst of intense rift speculations inside the Pakistan cricket camp, PCB has come out to clarify that Shaheen Afridi was never offered the vice-captain role in white ball cricket after Babar Azam was reinstated as captain in March this year.

Pakistan cricket is full of surprises as each day the board or the players are in headlines for mostly wrong reasons.

This time, ex-T20 captain Shaheen Afridi has grabbed limelight in the aftermath of a starling speculation. Pakistan local media reported yesterday that Afridi was offered the role of vice-captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup by PCB.

Did Shaheen refuse to be Babar's deputy?

However, the pacer allegedly refused to be Babar Azam’s deputy since the latter replaced him as white ball captain after just 2 series and he is not supposedly on good terms with the captain.

Naturally, the speculations added fuel to the rift rumours brewing inside the camp since the captaincy saga unfolded following the conclusion of the 2023 ODI World Cup.

That being said, hours after the rumours broke out, PCB clarified its stance to PTI as sources claim that board never approached Shaheen Afridi with an alleged vice-captain role.

In fact, the selection committee were against the idea of appointing a deputy for Babar Azam for the upcoming ICC event.

Not only that, but PCB revealed that a certain selector discussed vice-captaincy with Afridi back in March. However, it was an informal and private discussion, and nothing was officially approved or initiated by the board itself.

Additionally, PCB sources claimed that these speculations are purposely put out as agendas to tarnish Pakistan cricket’s image and distract the team ahead of the major ICC event.
