As the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) intensifies its hunt for a new head coach for the men's national team, several renowned former cricketers have emerged as potential candidates.

Among the top Indian names are VVS Laxman and Gautam Gambhir. The board has also reportedly shortlisted international names like Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, and Stephen Fleming. However, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) mentor Gautam Gambhir is the frontrunner.

Gambhir has set 'one' condition to become India coach

According to a report in Dainik Jagaran, Gambhir is keen on taking up the role of India's head coach. Despite this being his first year as KKR's mentor, the former India opening batter has expressed a strong interest in succeeding Rahul Dravid.

However, Gambhir has set a crucial condition before he applies: he wants a 'selection guarantee'. Gambhir is only willing to apply if he is assured of being chosen as Dravid's replacement.

The deadline to apply for the head coach position is May 27, and it remains to be seen how many candidates have applied. Although the BCCI denied approaching Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, both claimed to have been contacted and declined the offer.

If Gambhir takes up the head coach role, he must step down as KKR's mentor. Under his mentorship, KKR has shown a remarkable resurgence this season, topping the points table and reaching the IPL 2024 final, where they will face Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 26.

Gambhir's leadership has significantly boosted his credentials as a potential head coach for Team India.
