In a dramatic development, Shaheen Afridi has refused to become Pakistan's vice-captain for the upcoming T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and United States.

As reported by The News, the PCB approached Afridi for the vice-captain's role. However, the left-arm seamer turned down the offer and refused to play as Babar Azam's deputy in the competition.

As Shaheen has opted not to be Pakistan's vice-captain, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Rizwan are the frontrunners for the role. Both have been exceptional captains in the Pakistan Super League and can assist Babar in decision-making during the mega event.

Regarding Shaheen, the speedster was appointed Pakistan's T20I skipper after Babar Azam stepped down from captaincy following the Men in Green's abysmal performance in the ICC World Cup in India last year.

However, his captaincy stint didn't last long, as Pakistan suffered a crushing series defeat against New Zealand. Furthermore, as Shaheen-led Lahore Qalandars finished last on the PSL 2024 points table, the PCB reinstated Babar as the skipper in white-ball formats.

Since then, reports of cold wars between the two powerhouses of Pakistan cricket have surfaced in the media from time to time.

Meanwhile, Pakistan have named a strong squad for the T20I World Cup. Led by Babar, the Men in Green will kickstart their World Cup campaign against the United States on June 6.
