In a groundbreaking development, the BCCI might allow the IPL franchises to retain several uncapped players under a separate slot ahead of the 2025 mega auction. As per the old retention policy, the IPL teams couldn't retain more than four players, three Indians or two overseas, and the retention of the uncapped players was also limited to just two.

However, according to The Times of India, the franchises could persuade the BCCI to consider separate retention slots for the uncapped players.

If it happens, the franchises might retain at least two uncapped players from their IPL 2024 squads under a separate slot.

The teams will push the BCCI to amend the retention rules as they have groomed these uncapped players.

"Every franchise could be allowed to retain, say, two-three uncapped players from their squad in the 2024 IPL season under an additional slot. The franchises are likely to push for it. Almost all the franchises have developed certain uncapped players which they don't want to lose since they have invested in them over the last two-three years," a source told TOI.

Ahead of the much-awaited mega auction, the franchises are set to meet the apex body today to discuss several things concerning retentions, the time period between two mega auctions, and the re-activation of the Right To Match card.

As reported earlier, the BCCI might also increase the salary cap from INR 90Cr to a significantly higher INR 130-140Cr.
