How auction blunders led to SRH's demise [Source: AP Photo]
The Sunrisers Hyderabad had an IPL campaign to remember in 2024 when the Pat Cummins led side reached the finale of the tournament. They rewrote how batting in T20 format should be done and everyone had their eyes set on the Orange Army prior to the IPL 2025 season.
However, not everyone knows that disaster already struck prior to the IPL season began and SRH's dismal journey was already written in the stars. The team owners made quite a few blunders in the auction which led to a disastrous IPL journey and also, the outside factor had a negative influence.
Here are two important factors as to why the team failed to qualify for the playoffs in the ongoing season.
Auction disaster by team owners
Taking a leaf out of their IPL 2024 campaign, SRH owners headed into the IPL 2025 mega auction with the intention of investing heavily in their batting department. That's what they did as the side added Ishan Kishan in the team, but failed to fill in the loopholes in their bowling.
Barring Harshal Patel, almost all the key bowlers had an off season and this impacted their teams' performance.
Criterion | Pat Cummins | Mohammed Shami | Eshan Malinga |
Matches | 13 | 9 | 6 |
Dismissals | 16 | 6 | 10 |
Economy | 8.92 | 11.23 | 9.00 |
While Malinga still had a decent season considering this was his debut season, Pat Cummins and more than him, Mohammed Shami had an underwhelming campaign. Shami was even dropped from the side midway through the season. Also, the inability to invest in quality spinner hampered their cause.
The pressure to score 300 in every game
287, 286, 277, 266, these are some of the scores of the SRH side in the last two seasons. 287 is also the highest score in IPL history as the world kept glued to their screens everytime SRH came out to bat.
However, due to their outstanding batting campaign last season, everyone, including media and fans expected them to score 300 every-time they came out to bat and this disrupted their campaign.
Even on surfaces where 160-180 was a par score, SRH, in the need to score big runs went hard and lost wickets which contributed to their demise this season.
