Zaheer Khan was recently appointed as the mentor of the IPL franchise, Lucknow Super Giants.

Zaheer, a veteran of the Indian cricket team, was appointed as the mentor, after Gautam Gambhir left for Kolkata Knight Riders ahead of the IPL 2024 season. The position was left vacant and now it has been filled by arguably one of the finest pace bowlers produced by India.

Bowling coach position left vacant after Morkel's departure

Under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir, LSG reached playoffs in successive seasons, but once he departed, the franchise finished at the seventh position in the table.

Apart from Gambhir, another prominent LSG staff member, Morne Morkel left the team to become the new bowling coach of Team India. Interestingly, Morkel was also the bowling coach of the Lucknow side, and under his guidance, the youngsters performed exceedingly well.

Now, with the ex-Proteas pacer gone, the position has been left vacant. When asked to Zaheer about the need of a bowling coach for the next season, the newly appointed mentor gave a sarcastic answer:

"Do you need a bowling coach when I'm here? I will do everything that the team needs," Zaheer stated at an event hosted by LSG.

The LSG mentor added that the team already has good crop of players, and the building blocks are already in place.

"LSG are a relatively young franchise in IPL, but it has not been looked upon like that, the building blocks are pretty much in place."

Zaheer expected to deliver the goods in IPL 2025

Zaheer, an exceptional bowler in his prime, will be expected to take LSG to new heights under his guidance. He has already worked with some of the best bowlers, during his stint with Mumbai Indians, and is expected to weave the same magic when he starts working with his new team.

At Mumbai Indians, he worked as director of cricket, before taking up the role as the head of global development. Ahead of IPL 2025 season, Zaheer will be involved in scouting young players and developing them during off-season.
