Former Indian captain MS Dhoni led the CSK franchise to their historic fifth title triumph back in IPL 2023. Amidst much speculations involving his imminent retirement from the game, the 42-year-old extended his IPL career by another season after the CSK management retained him during the IPL 2024 retention phase back in November 2023.

AB de Villiers, who went up against MS Dhoni a number of times during his international career for South Africa and in IPL for RCB, recently hailed the ageing warhorse for his fitness and longevity, and even likened him to a ‘diesel engine’ that never ends.

“There were a lot of rumours about MS Dhoni finishing up last year; that was not the case, ladies and gentlemen. He would be back again. Will this be his final season? No one knows. He just seems to be this diesel engine that never ends. He keeps running. What an incredible player, what an incredible captain," the former South African batsman said.

Soon after winning the IPL title in 2023 for CSK, MS Dhoni underwent a knee surgery in Mumbai. He worked towards attaining full recovery in the subsequent months as part of his rehabilitation phase.

The cricketer recently reached Chennai to attend CSK’s pre-season training camp. He is slated to lead the franchise and their title-defense campaign will commence within the opening game of the tournament itself, as they are scheduled to face RCB on March 22.

The match will be staged at CSK’s home ground, the iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.
