In India cricket is treated as no less than a religion, and cricketers are worshiped as equivalent to god. Former captain and legend Sachin Tendulkar is a living example, who for many is the 'God of Cricket', and to date is on a pedestal that very few can even reach.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni comes quite close in that regard but is known more for being 'Thala' than a God, and enjoys admiration and adulation amongst fans even after retiring from international cricket, something former India and Chennai Super Kings teammate Suresh Raina has spoken highly of.

As quoted by CricTracker, Raina, who flourished under Dhoni's captaincy in national and IPL colours stated how Dhoni's fan following can only be compared to the maestro Tendulkar's, who has a special place in people's hearts.

'That love was showered on Mahi bhai by fans thereafter' - Raina

"Absolutely, I saw Sachin Tendulkar receive this kind of love when we first came into the Indian team. That love was showered on Mahi bhai by Indian fans thereafter. ‘MSD, Mahendra Singh Dhoni’ the name alone is embedded in people’s hearts".

Other former players like Parthiv Patel and RP Singh also echoed similar sentiments to Raina, mentioned how Dhoni's fandom keeps on growing as years pass by.

Dhoni will next be seen in Indian Premier League (IPL) captaining Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who will began their fifth title defence on March 22 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
