The Mumbai Indians’ IPL 2025 opener against Chennai Super Kings felt incomplete without Jasprit Bumrah’s fiery presence. The pace ace, sidelined since January with a stress-related back injury from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, watched helplessly as CSK chased down 156 with ease.
Bumrah's absence, a first since his 2023 surgery, left a gaping hole in MI’s attack, a stark reminder of his irreplaceable role. Despite the BCCI’s mandated five-week rest to aid recovery, uncertainty looms.
MI Unsure On Bumrah's Comeback
MI’s cautious approach hints at a prolonged wait, prioritising long-term fitness over hurried returns. For a franchise built on Bumrah’s mastery, patience has become an unspoken strategy.
Bumrah’s injury, sustained during the BGT finale, ruled him out of the Champions Trophy and cast a shadow over his IPL participation. Chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar had earlier emphasized the need for rest, “The BCCI medical team advised a five-week offload for recovery.”
MI assistant coach Paras Mhambrey remained tight-lipped on timelines of Bumrah's recovery post-defeat.
“He is doing well. We’re happy with his progress from the NCA. I won’t dwell on the timeframe. The management and NCA will decide. He’s a big part of MI’s success—we want him back, but only when ready.”
CSK Capitalise On The Void
Without Bumrah’s venom, CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad (53*) and Rachin Ravindra (65*) cruised to a four-wicket win. Fans’ pre-match fears materialised as MI’s attack lacked bite, underscoring Bumrah’s value.
With 165 wickets in 133 IPL matches at 22.51 average and 7.30 economy, Bumrah remains MI’s second-highest wicket-taker after Lasith Malinga. His two fifers and four four-wicket hauls echo a legacy now paused, but far from over.
