The latest T20 World Champions, India, who are on their first tour since the triumph to Zimbabwe conceded a 13-run defeat in the first T20I in the five-match series under new captain, Shubman Gill at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday, July 6.

India asked Zimbabwe to bat after winning the toss and restricted the hosts to just 115 after the first innings with Ravi Bishnoi taking a four-wicket haul. In response, India kept losing wickets throughout the run chase as they got bundled out 102 with captain Gill top-scoring with his 31 (29).

Reflecting on the defeat, Gill credited the bowlers for their effort, however, admitting to their poor fielding costing them some runs. He also pointed out the disappointment with the bat saying, that things didn't pan out as expected.

"We bowled well, but we let ourselves down in the field. Everyone looked a bit rusty. We wanted to take time, and enjoy the batting, but didn't pan out that way. Halfway down, we'd lost five wickets," said the young captain.

Shubman also took responsibility and showed disappointment with his dismissal while praising Washington Sundar for keeping India in the match.

"It would have been best if I'd stayed till the end. Disappointed with the way I got out and how it panned out. Washi kept our hopes up but when you have to chase 115 and your No. 10 bat is the one you want winning you the game, you know something's gone wrong," he concluded.

India will face Zimbabwe in the second T20I at the same venue tomorrow, Sunday, July 7 at 16.30 (IST).
