Former India batter and current head coach Gautam Gambhir is focused on coaching India to a historic third consecutive Test series victory in Australia. As per Gambhir’s recent interaction with the media before leaving for Australia, India will prioritize winning the five-match series than looking to qualify for ICC World Test Championship 2023-2025 final.
If truth be told, it is comparatively easier for India to win in Australia than to qualify for a third consecutive WTC final after a 0-3 series loss against New Zealand at home earlier this month. For the unversed, India will have to beat Australia 4-0 if they intend to play the final at the Lord’s in June.
“Honestly, we are not looking at what’s going to happen in the World Test Championship, whether we are going to qualify or not. Every series is important. When you play for your country, when you represent your country, every series is important, irrespective of what has happened in the past. For us, I think it is two good teams playing against each other. We are absolutely keen to go out there and perform and try to win the series,” Gambhir told the reporters.
As A Player, Gautam Gambhir Never Won A Test Series In Australia
Part of India’s embarrassing 0-4 drubbing down under 13 years ago, it is understandable why Gambhir is eager to win in Australian conditions as a coach. While Gambhir missed the Test tour of Australia in 2007-08 due to an injury, he wasn’t in contention during 2014-2015.
India, who had registered two successive Test series victories in Australia under head coach Ravi Shastri, haven’t lost to them in this format since 2015. Having started his tenure on a shaky note on the back of ODI series loss in Sri Lanka and a first home Test series loss after 12 years, Gambhir would be hoping to maintain the winning streak against Pat Cummins and his men.
Having shunned down the prospect of playing a warm-up match, India will partake in the first Test at the Optus Stadium on November 22.
