New Zealand spinners Ajaz Patel and Glenn Phillips engulfed India’s strong batting line-up on Day 3 of Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium. Patel and Phillips’ spin brilliance helped New Zealand clinch the three-match Test series over India by a historic 3-0 margin.

It took Team India nearly two-and-a-half overs of the third morning to break New Zealand’s final-wicket pair of Ajaz Patel and William O’Rourke. Ravindra Jadeja orchestrated the dismissal with a tossed-up delivery to get rid of Patel for just eight. In doing so, Jadeja picked up his second five-fer of the match and the 15th of his career to claim astonishing match-haul of 10-120.

With New Zealand bowled out for 174 in 45.5 overs, Team India was left to chase 147 runs in the decisive innings of the match.

Chasing 147, Indian captain and legendary opener Rohit Sharma demonstrated intent for a while until he was holed out by Glenn Phillips off Matt Henry for just 11 in the third over of the innings. At the other end, in-form spinner Ajaz Patel broke through India’s middle-order with the wickets of Shubman Gill (1), Virat Kohli (1) and Sarfaraz Khan (1) in quick succession.

Glenn Phillips also delivered the prized-scalp of dashing young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal as Team India crashed to 29-5 in 7.1 overs.

Amidst tumbling wickets, Rishabh Pant at number five unfurled his second attacking half-century of the match by belting 64 runs off 57 balls with nine boundaries and a six. His 42-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja (6) and 35-run partnership with Washington Sundar (12) even took India past the 100-run mark.

However, Pant’s dismissal against the run of play to Ajaz Patel triggered yet another batting collapse for India, as they lost their final four wickets for just 15 runs to get enveloped for 121 in 29.1 overs.

Patel claimed exceptional figures of 6-57 to pick up his second five-fer of the match, while Phillips assisted with three key wickets as New Zealand secured the Test by 25 runs and the series by a historic 3-0 margin.
