Rohit Sharma to not travel with Team India [Source: @CricCrazyJohns/x.com]
Indian fans are on edge as word spreads that captain Rohit Sharma might skip the trip to Australia with the squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The skipper is set to become a father for the second time soon, so there’s a chance he will miss the first Test in Perth.
Indian Captain Rohit Sharma Not Flying to Australia Yet
However, according to a Times of India report, Rohit Sharma shouldn’t be ruled out just yet, as he might travel to Australia later during the third week of the month.
"Yes, Rohit is not travelling with the team, but don't rule him out of the first Test as yet. He may end up flying to Australia later third week, closer to the first Test," an insider told TOI.
With a tight schedule ahead, Team India is heading Down Under in two groups, departing on Sunday and Monday. The buzz, however, is about whether Rohit will make it in time for the opening Test on November 22 in Perth.
Bumrah on Standby as Skipper
If Rohit does miss out on that first Test, India’s ace pacer, Jasprit Bumrah is expected to step in as captain. Bumrah, known for his sharp and aggressive bowling, would face a new challenge in leadership and the Indian cricketing community will be eager to see how he handles it if Rohit indeed misses out.
India’s WTC Finals Hopes on the Line
Meanwhile, this Border-Gavaskar series isn’t just any face-off. India needs to bag four out of the five matches to ensure a direct spot in the World Test Championship finals at Lord’s in June 2025.
It’s a tall order, especially with Australia in stunning form. Furthermore, adding to the pressure is India’s slip to second place in the WTC points table after a humiliating 0-3 series defeat against New Zealand at home.
If India wins fewer than four games vs Australia, that scenario would mean relying on other teams’ results in their bid to qualify for the final. For now, fans can only hope that Rohit joins the Indian team for the series opener. If he ends up skipping it, India will not only miss his captaincy but also his explosive batting at the top.
